A Guide to Direct Access to Physical Therapy in GA:
Two Quick Facts:
- Yes!!! In GA, you can see a physical therapist (PT) without a referral for up to 8 visits or 21 days before needing a referral from a physician. This means you can skip the extra appointment, save time, and start treatment sooner. Please see the APTA Link regarding Direct Access.
- Medicare, Medicaid, and Patients with Government Plans: are NOT eligible for Direct Access. If you’re looking for a provider, we have relationships with many doctors in the area and are happy to recommend someone we work with and trust. For more information on Direct Access eligibility visit the Medicare, Medicaid or Tricare websites.

For many people, the idea of going to physical therapy still follows an old, familiar path:
First, you get injured. Then, you schedule a visit with your primary care provider. That provider evaluates you and decides whether physical therapy is necessary. If it is, they write you a referral—and only then can you begin your search for a physical therapist.
That process is still common. But in today’s healthcare landscape, where convenience and accessibility matter more than ever, things have evolved—especially here in Georgia.
A Better Way: Direct Access to Physical Therapy: (The Legislation)
In 2010, the state of Georgia enacted a law (House Bill 801) that changed how patients can access physical therapy. This law introduced what’s called direct access, allowing individuals to seek care from a physical therapist without first needing a referral from a physician.
In 2015, Georgia revised the law through (House Bill 505), which expanded direct access by allowing physical therapists to treat patients without a referral for up to 8 visits or 21 days
What Is Direct Access?
Direct access allows you to:
- See a physical therapist first without visiting your primary care doctor
- Start treatment sooner, which can lead to faster recovery
- Avoid unnecessary delays and extra medical costs
- Take control of your healthcare decisions
This is especially helpful for common issues like:
- Muscle strains or joint pain
- Back or neck discomfort
- Sports injuries
- Movement limitations or stiffness
Important Things to Know About Direct Access:
While direct access makes physical therapy more accessible, there are a few key points to keep in mind:
- There are limitations: If your condition is more complex or doesn’t improve within a certain timeframe, your physical therapist may refer you to a physician.
- Insurance may vary: Some insurance plans still require a physician referral for coverage, even though the law allows direct access. It’s always a good idea to check your benefits.
- Medicare, Medicaid, and Patients with Government Plans: are NOT eligible for Direct Access. If you’re looking for a provider, we have relationships with many doctors in the area and are happy to recommend someone we work with and trust.
- Your therapist will guide you: Licensed physical therapists are trained to recognize when additional medical evaluation is needed.
The Traditional Route Still Exists
Even with direct access available, many patients still come to physical therapy through a physician referral—and that’s perfectly okay. The best way to clear up any questions regarding Direct Access is by giving one of our clinics a call to discuss your options.
But here’s something many people don’t realize:
You Have the Right to Choose Your Physical Therapist:
If your doctor gives you a referral for physical therapy, that referral might include the name of a specific clinic or company. However, you are not required to go there.
You can:
- Take your referral anywhere you choose
- Select a clinic based on convenience, reputation, or personal preference
- Continue care with a therapist you already know and trust
- Your referral is your choice, not a directive.
Putting It All Together
Physical therapy is more accessible today than ever before. Whether you choose to go the traditional route through a physician or take advantage of direct access, the most important thing is that you get the care you need—when you need it.
Georgia’s direct access law empowers you to take control of your health, reduce delays, and start feeling better faster. And no matter how you begin your journey, remember: you have the freedom to choose where you go for care.
